There has been increased use of camera technology over the last decade. Cameras within public right-of-way are becoming more common place with uses that range from general vehicle detection at traffic signals and vehicle counting to surveillance and security. Recently Flock Safety’s license plate recognition (LPR) system has become a topic of concern. Flock’s LPR camera is used by law enforcement, neighborhoods, and businesses to scan vehicles and capture identifiable details, beyond license plate numbers. This capturing of identifying information has been controversial, raising concerns surrounding any traffic camera, including those used for traffic data collection like our countCAM4 traffic camera.
What StreetLogic Pro’s countCAM Cameras Do
Our countCAM4 camera is installed for temporary data collection and used by traffic engineers, data collection firms, and government agencies to record traffic data safely and efficiently. The countCAM4 collect non-identifying video that is then processed into usebale data that includes:
- Vehicle volume, speed, and classification (defining a vehicle based on axle and weight characteristics) along a roadway.
- Vehicle turning movement counts and classification at an intersection.
- Traffic conditions such as queue length (how many cars are sitting at a red light), gap studies (how long is the time between cars on a roadway), train crossing delay monitoring (how long are train arms blocking a roadway).
- Pedestrian and bicycle counts.
Traffic and transportation engineers use this data to make design decisions such as pavement thickness and composition, traffic signal timing and operational needs, intersection control type (stop sign, roundabout, traffic signals, etc.), parking lot capacity needs, and more.
What StreetLogic Pro Cameras DON’T Do
Unlike Flock and other LPR systems, our cameras are not designed to:
- Read or record license plate numbers.
- Collect personally identifiable information (PII).
- Identify individual drivers or passengers.
- Track vehicles over time or across multiple locations.
- Support automated enforcement or issue traffic citations.
- Share information with law enforcement for ticketing purposes.
- Perform continuous scanning (instead, we use short-term data collection)
Why This Matters
Our customers and their clients rely on our cameras for accurate traffic data, which DOES NOT require LPRs or personally identifiable information. This can be accomplished without invading your privacy, as our focus is on understanding HOW traffic moves, and HOW to make it more efficient, not WHO is moving or WHY.
